This review may be what is considered “cross posted” with another nearby treatment facility owned by Banyan as the two facilities pass patients back and forth and both had a hand in my daughter’s care. I have never been more disappointed and angrier at a healthcare facility than I am at Banyan Treatment Centers. Almost every aspect of my family’s interaction with the staff at these facilities (with the notable exception of Caleb Bogard, the family liaison) can only be described as horrifying. Last fall I had the unfortunate experience of having to have my 19-year-old daughter involuntarily committed to a JFK Hospital in West Palm Beach after a long-lasting manic episode that culminated in her attempting to sneak back to our home state after speaking about some delusions and vague suicidal ideations. As JFK only offers short term medical clearance and stabilization, she wound up being referred to the residential programs that Banyan offers in lower Palm Beach County and Broward County as a dual diagnosis (Substance Abuse and Psychiatric) patient in the absence of any substance abuse or addiction history. From what we saw, the focus of these programs is mostly recovery from addiction with minimal psychiatric care made available while in residence that mostly focuses on future outpatient treatment by a professional. Early phone calls from our daughter showed a worsening of the manic state and delusions- discussing starting a family with a fellow resident (while being an unabashed lesbian since her early teens) and traumatic events that she was recalling that had never happened. The treatment staff allowed her to wallow in these delusions while giving them validation as they cut off contact with her mother and I as they found our urgings that our daughter’s behavior was bordering on psychotic to be “part of the problem” as one staff member stated. There were periods where the staff allowed a delusional and obviously psychotic patient prohibit her treatment team from asking her parents for any feedback and urged us to accept her aggressive phone calls consisting of mostly nonsensical rambling as “who she really is”. Also, during this time, they were providing cigarettes to her at the age of 19 (too young to posses them according to the law) which lead to a full-fledged dependency when she was released. Despite being eliminated from the treatment process; the staff had no reservations when calling about money matters. Her copayments were a frequent topic, and her discharge from the program after over three months occurred in a rapid fashion when I admitted that I was no longer able to pay them. They made several attempts to coerce me into paying deposits for “transitional housing” in the area, and used phrases such as “well, she isn’t going back to your house” and “guess you’re gonna put your daughter in the shelter”. I must make it clear that her mother and I made it clear from the start that she was always welcome home with certain rules and expectations (such as continuing with treatment). Staff even called with my daughter on the line as well demanding that I provide them a credit card over the phone for “stuff she needs”. When I declined and offered to make arrange arrangements myself through Insta Cart and Amazon I was met with teeth sucking by the “staff member” and hung up on. The worse part about it is when the money finally ran out and my daughter was released, she was sent home medicated to the point of being a zombie. No follow-up treatment plans were set- the Outpatient Treatment provider Banyan staff claimed they referred my daughter to had never heard of her and was unable to start treating at the time. The psychiatric provider I finally got her to was horrified when she saw the duplication of sedatives that she was prescribed and general overmedication. I am still in the process of finding an oversight agency to start an investigation into the practices at Banyan facilities. They are lucky that they operate in a grey area in terms of healthcare facilities and I have to shop their transgressions around.

Overall it was a fantastic learning and growing experience. The staff genuinely cares about the patients. If you put in the effort, and really try, you cannot help but walk away from Banyan with tools that will help you fight the addictions that haunt you. I wish there was a little more structure for the initial orientation and getting started, but you easily catch on within the first several days there. The counselors are genuine and challenge you on a regular basis. The housing is comfortable, and being able to cook for yourself and buy the groceries you want is a big plus. The rules are strict, and the near complete cut off from the rest of the world is rough, but I don't think I would have gotten as much out of it without having that set routine. Thank you Banyan.

I spent 40 days at Banyan Pompano Beach. I received some of the best care I’ve ever had and was treated with respect as well as understanding. Going to Banyan Pompano Beach truly saved my life. I could go on for days but I will spare you all the details and just say that I highly, highly recommended Banyan Pompano Beach!
