How do you rate the most wonderful organization out there ? Tammy and Joe de la Cruz of Groton, CT. founded this organization, and along with other loving and caring people, they are making a real difference in the epidemic of drug addiction in CT. I truly believe they have made more of a difference than any of the drug programs the government has tried. Drug addiction is a disease, just like alcoholism and cancer and many others. If you haven't been directly affected by this disease, I'm sure you know a family who has. Community Speaks Out (CSO) gives comfort, love, knowledge, resources and aid to the addict and his or her family. CSO gives them a place to talk and not feel alone, hopeless or ashamed. When the addict and the family are not fighting this devastating disease alone, it makes all the difference in the world. While this virus is going on the CSO group are meeting every Wednesday at 5:30 pm on line with zoom. CSO also has a Facebook page and so does Tammy and Joe de la Cruz. Once the virus is over they will resume their monthly meetings, every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Groton Library. Anyone can come to the meetings. I'm ashamed to say that I was one of the many that had a preconception of what kind of a person a drug addict was. The picture I would imagine of a drug addict, was never of clean cut, beautiful and smart young person. Yet, that's exactly the description of most of them. They are the pride of their moms and dads, that love them dearly. They are honor students, volunteers, the captains of their teams. I started going to the meetings just because I love Tammy and Joe and I wanted to be supportive. But I have learned so much and I now understand how it happens and that it can happen to anyone at any age. But it is taking the lives of so many young people. Beautiful, smart, talented and loving sons and daughters. I've met and talked to so many heart broken parents that are still grieving and coming to the meetings to find support, comfort, love and understanding from others. Then these broken hearts turn around and give all they received and more to help someone else. Some times families come with their brave child, who desparetly wants to beat addiction, and others going through or done with recover, come to the meetings. But that entire room is so filled with love and a deep desire to help and make a difference in a life thats suffering. The love is so thick in that room, at every meeting, you can truly feel it...... and it feels WONDERFUL. It's God at His best.
