Alternative Treatments
While DayBreak features many medically sanctioned addiction treatments, we also offer alternative treatments and holistic therapies that are widely known to support recovery. Many clients respond extremely well to these treatments. Together with more conventional therapies like CBT, our alternative treatments provide clients with a broad range of support for managing their addiction and preventing relapse. While not every addiction program in Pennsylvania is equipped to offer alternative therapies like yoga or family therapy, DayBreak features an expansive menu of treatment offerings.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is increasing in popularity as an effective addiction treatment. Specifically, it is used during drug and alcohol detox to reduce discomfort from withdrawal symptoms as well as during residential treatment programs or even outpatient treatment programs. How acupuncture causes people to feel calmer or more comfortable is not entirely understood, but practitioners believe that the use of needles placed in trigger points on the body causes the body to release its natural feel-good endorphins. As these endorphins are released, people tend to feel better. Clients report feeling relief from cravings to use as well as withdrawal symptoms. Not all clients are interested in trying acupuncture, but it may be the ideal addiction recovery therapy for you. If you are interested in acupuncture therapy, DayBreak can include it in your treatment plan.
Yoga
Yoga is a healthful activity that can be extremely beneficial to people recovering from alcoholism or drug addiction. An ancient practice, yoga involves precise movement, stretching, and breathing techniques. Its focus on mindfulness is helpful for clients who need to find healthy ways to manage their stress and negative emotions. Yoga is a calming activity that supports clients’ recovery goals. Addiction management takes time and practice. Yoga is just one strategy that many people in recovery report to work well. Because yoga benefits both physical and mental health, it’s become a popular alternative addiction therapy in alcohol and drug rehab centers in Pennsylvania and elsewhere. Also, if you find yoga helps you keep your recovery on track, you may want to practice it on an ongoing basis after you complete your residential treatment or outpatient program.
Meditation
Meditation is a practice that helps people in recovery manage their stress, negative emotions, and other triggers to use alcohol or drugs. During meditation sessions, clients strive to clear their minds of all thoughts and feelings. Their goal is simply to become mindful of their present calm state of being. They will practice slowed breathing techniques and may focus on a single object in their room to help them empty their mind of thoughts. DayBreak offers meditation therapy because it’s been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, increase focus and concentration, improve emotional stability, alleviate mental health symptoms, and help ward off relapse. Having learned meditation techniques at our rehab center in Pennsylvania, clients can practice this method of stress relief whenever they choose.
Group Therapy
Group therapy often plays a core role in rehab centers in Pennsylvania. Recovery meetings that involve groups of people recovering from an addiction have long been popular, especially with groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. At DayBreak, group therapy sessions are therapist-led and designed to encourage participants to support one another as they discuss topics associated with addiction and its management. Group therapy has a way of reminding people that they aren’t alone in their recovery journey. An addiction can feel like an isolating and lonely experience. Plus, many people in recovery are tasked to leave many friends and unhealthy relationships behind because of their negative impact. Group therapy is a way for clients to meet other people who are also trying to change their lives for the better.
One on One Therapy
One on one therapy is a core treatment offered at most Northeast treatment centers and elsewhere in the country. During individual therapy sessions, clients discuss many aspects of their addiction. Their therapist will help them identify what led them to abuse alcohol or drugs. Knowing that triggers them to use is essential for managing the addiction. In essence, they have to manage those triggers successfully in order to refrain from turning to drugs or alcohol in the future. During one-on-one counseling sessions, clients may work to change their unhealthy patterns of thinking. They might discuss problems they’re having at work or at home. Their therapist can help them find strategies for problem solving so that they can keep their recovery on track.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is another important treatment option that is advantageous for many clients. As many clients know, relationships can suffer because of addiction’s impact. DayBreak offers family therapy in order to help clients repair their relationships and to help family members cope with their loved one’s addiction and past behaviors that may have caused a rift in the family. During therapy sessions, therapists will help family members understand how to provide healthy ways of supporting their loved one and to avoid unhealthy or enabling behaviors that can hinder addiction recovery. Because each family is unique, therapists take a customized approach to helping each one address their issues to heal relationships and support the client’s recovery journey.
Trauma Informed Therapy
About a third of people suffering from addiction also have a dual diagnosis. Among these, post traumatic stress disorder is not a rare occurrence. Many people suffering from mental illnesses like PTSD turned to drugs or alcohol in order to self-medicate away their symptoms. Trauma informed therapy is designed to help clients manage their addiction with their past trauma in mind. That trauma should ideally be taken into account in order to provide the level of support that clients need to manage all of their symptoms–addiction symptoms and mental health symptoms. The truth is–addiction doesn’t come out of nowhere. It often has its genesis in past trauma or multiple traumatic experiences. Addressing that trauma is important to the successful treatment of drug and alcohol addiction.
EMDR
Short for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, EMDR is a treatment based on visual stimulation. It is specifically used to help people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder or having experienced traumatic events in the past that impacted their alcohol or drug use. The treatments are designed to help clients improve the way they cope with the negative emotions associated with their traumatic experiences. Not all treatment centers in Pennsylvania offer EMDR as an addiction treatment. At DayBreak, it is among our alternative treatment options.
Physical Fitness
During recovery programs at DayBreak, clients developed effective strategies for managing their addiction and its triggers. Physical fitness is one of those strategies that supports whole-person wellness. One does not have to be a talented athlete to benefit from physical fitness activities. As an addiction therapy, physical fitness at any level can be beneficial for helping clients manage common triggers to use such as negative emotions or stress. When a person exercises, the body releases feel-good endorphins that flood both the brain and body. These endorphins go to work reducing the muscle aches and soreness associated with exercise and also wind up having a positive effect on the brain–specifically on a person’s mood and mental energy levels. Working out can support a healthy lifestyle, which is part of a sound sober living plan.
Off Site Activities
Off site activities provide opportunities for clients to connect with other people in recovery, to alleviate stress, and to reintegrate back into the world in healthy ways. Again, not all Pennsylvania addiction treatment centers offer recreational off site activities, but we have found that it is a positive aspect of our recovery programs. It also gives clients a mental break from their intensive therapy sessions. Our addiction specialists plan many different off site activities throughout the year in order to enhance our treatment programs.
