The Elms is a longer-term transitional residential program designed to help 25 men transition to independent living while maintaining a sober, healthy program of recovery. Residents commit to at least one year with the program but may stay for up to two years, contract to abstain from all substance use, attend appropriate AA/NA meetings, participate in house meetings, consent to the house rules and fully participate in all additional aspects of the aftercare program. The Elms provides a safe, sober and supportive environment to empower men in their recovery. To encourage an active and independent lifestyle, residents engage in the community through part-time employment, education or community service volunteering. With the support of continual guidance from case managers, peer mentorship, and daily practice, residents are empowered to break the unhealthy habits of addiction and establish balanced, independent, and healthy lifestyles in recovery.

The Elms offers single occupancy rooms, a shared kitchen, living rooms, laundry, shared cable, community meeting room, newly renovated rooms and outdoor recreational area. Residents share the responsibilities associated with cleaning the facility.

Located in downtown Amesbury, The Elms is within walking distance to a hospital, numerous stores, gyms, library, banks, restaurants, medical offices, and places of worship. Residents are also able to access area lakes, rivers and beaches. The program is also located within minutes of the Nicholas J. Costello Transportation Center for easy access to public transportation.

The Elms is partially funded through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. Monthly rent is subsidized through Amesbury Housing Authority. Residents are responsible for supplying their own food and toiletries.

I lived in this sober house I was.there for 2 years and was able to get a firm grip on my alcoholism. I was able to go to school and get a degree from Northern Essex community college. I highly recommend the Elms. I gave me the time to work on my recovery.Thank God for this program.
