My mom has been at the Grand Islander for almost six years. This nursing home is exemplary. All of the staff have been so wonderful and caring to my mom. They communicate with me often about her condition and her plan of care. Even during the pandemic they made it easy for me to talk with my mom over zoom. I truly wish I could list all of the nurses and CSA’s who have given so much comfort and love to our family. Well done Grand Islander. I’m a big fan❣️

During the time that my Dad lived at Grand Islander, the entire staff and community made him feel at home, safe and comfortable. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone from Ellen Downing, the administrator of the facility, to the nurses, aids, front desk and kitchen staff for their outstanding efforts in making my dad's stay as comfortable and happy as possible. As his care needs increased, the personal care attendants and nurses were attentive, compassionate, and always had a sense of humor. I felt that my dad was always treated with dignity and respect. The exemplary care and kindnesses that was given will be a lasting gift to our whole family.

The caregivers are kind and responsive. They know their patients and try their best to meet their needs. Equally important, the social worker answers my phone call and gives me the information I am seeking or addresses the concerns am observing or presenting. They do need more caregivers, however. Having sufficient workers on each shift could make Grand Islander a five star nursing center.

There is no question that transitioning a parent to a higher level of care encompasses all the lesser desired human emotions amplified by exhaustion. All the tasks and responsibilities can be and usually are overwhelming. The Grand Islander has a caring organization in place to support both the family and the new resident in the process of becoming a resident. It starts with assigning a social worker who communicates and organizes care. Physical and occupational are there to evaluate and provide support when needed. A nursing staff coordinates medication from ordering to administration. They also prepare papers for doctor visits. The business office helps with understanding the financial process. Medicaid was new to me so the office manager, Sonni Almeida, was a huge help. The process can be accomplished if you take advantage of the assistance offered. The business office is personnel are knowledgeable and work hard. The reception desk people are always helpful and handle a great deal. The COVID protocols made their job much more difficult. However they did it well. The CNA staff work very hard all day. All the ones I’ve met are pleasant and are nice to mom. She needs daily care being unable to walk and legally blind. If mom does not have her hearing aids then there is great difficulty communicating. The dinning staff work hard to prepare healthy meals and mom always cleans her plate. Our social worker, Anna, does a thorough job organizing family meetings and being sure everyone is informed. The people at the Grand Islander are caring, thoughtful and kind. The demands that COVID put on the organization seemed at times impossible to fulfill. However each time I visited safety for staff, visitors and residents came first. It was comforting knowing that the people that are providing the care that is needed for mom are doing their best everyday just as her family would do. It is difficult to move a loved one to a place that will likely be their last destination. The Grand Islander provides a dignified place where a loved one can rest and their family can rely on the idea whatever happens it will be dignified and graceful. I am grateful mom is at the Grand Islander. Paul Reynolds
