Maryland Mental Health Statistics

Maryland and the DC area—like the rest of the nation—face challenges in the arena of teen mental health, in particular an alarming spike in depression rates. In Maryland, the number of teens suffering from depression has doubled over the past decade, and one out of every 10 youth suffers from severe major depression.

Despite this growing need, however, Maryland families searching online for “family counseling Maryland,” “teenage therapy near me,” or “teen counseling near me” often find limited options and availability. As a result, in 2020, 23,000 teens in Maryland with major depression received no treatment at all.

Comprehensive Care for Teens in Maryland

Newport Academy Rockville’s outpatient program is helping to address this gap in mental healthcare in the state, by providing teens with integrated, evidence-based care while helping them to build supportive peer communities. Our model of care incorporates teenage counseling services, including teen depression therapy, with local family therapy and parent support groups, so both young people and parents gain tools for better communication and enhanced family harmony.

Our Newport Academy location in Rockville MD is conveniently located two blocks from the Twinbrook metro stop, with easy access to the nation’s capital and nearby Bethesda. Just 20 minutes from downtown DC and Georgetown, Rockville is in the heart of Montgomery County, a community known for its parkland and nature centers, with acres of meadows, gardens, trails, and forest preserve.

During intake they never interviewed the patient and the person making the placement decision was a third person reviewer. They made a recommendation that is absurdly inappropriate and it has been almost a month and I am still waiting for a call from a clinician to discuss it. This is in violation of our patient rights and I will be submitting a formal complaint with the Maryland Behavioral Health Administration. Although I have yet to speak with a clinician the non-clinical staff has been very respectful and understanding.

NorthStar Academy is a FANTASTIC program! The leadership and staff are so well trained, patient and family focused, and compassionate and effective in their approaches. In addition to an impressive variety of therapy types (art, music, pet, individual, and group), the family support (individual family therapy, group family therapy, and parent support group) is invaluable. Our family is so grateful for NSA,. They have changed our lives for the better!

I was never as suicidal as I was when I was here. A complete money grab and scam, leaving children worse off than they were before. DON'T GO HERE!

A great treatment center for adolscent! My son has just completed a 2-month PHP program here and returned his high school life recently. Before that, he suspended his school life for one and half year, feeling anxious, depressing, and with no self-control each day. At first he felt unhappy to be settled in such a program, he also met many problems there time after time. But Northstar has the magic to change him, who later was reluctant to leave each day, and bid farewell to everyone the last day. He becomes more active, adjustable, and less anxious in most cases, and be hopeful to face the new school life. His primary therapist gave us the most powerful and effective guidance, who was trusted deeply by my son. She instructed him to solve each problem and learn to solve it by himself. the other staff are also quite professional, who always provided him effective instruction, great patience and warm response which made him aware, relaxed or amused. We really value the special period in Northstar, from when on my son's life will be changed dramatically.
