Progress House is a longer-term residential housing program, where 25 men work on their recovery in a highly supportive, safe, and sober environment for a period of up to two years. Residents must be free of substance use for a minimum of 30 days, and contract to abstain from all substance use and other addictive behaviors, attend appropriate AA/NA meetings, participate in house meetings, consent to the house rules and fully participate in all additional aspects of recovery. To ensure a successful transition to independent living, clients are required to work and pay a portion of their treatment fee. Case management and the peer-mentorship are the cornerstones of the program, building upon positive relationships amongst residents to assist each other with relapse prevention skills, effectively manage daily life stressors, coordination with community supports and empower them on their own recovery journey.

Progress House offers single occupancy rooms, a shared kitchen, living rooms, laundry, shared cable, weight room, community meeting room, a newly renovated kitchen, and outdoor recreational area. Residents share the responsibilities associated with cleaning the facility.

Located in downtown Amesbury, The Elms is within walking distance to numerous stores, gyms, library, banks, restaurants, medical offices, and churches, parks, and river and town beach accesses. The program is also located within minutes of the Nicholas J. Costello Transportation Center for easy access to public transportation.

The Progress House is partially funded through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services. Residents are expected to be gainfully employed and pay weekly rent in exchange for their room and treatment fees.
