What are the impacts of opioid addiction?

Opioid addictions are one of the leading issues in our world today. Opioid addictions not only significantly affect a person who is suffering, but also affect the people surrounding them as well. Most opioid addictions start after a person has been prescribed an opioid medication by a physician, and then quickly develop an addiction. Opioid addiction is when a person has been introduced to a type of drugs, like morphine, hydromorphone, or oxycodone.

Opioids work on the brain quickly and are used to block pain signals a person may be experiencing after experiencing an injury or trauma. Opioids work by weakening the pain receptors on the brain and causing them to not respond to any painful stimulus that the body may be experiencing. When someone is suffering from opioid addiction, this means that they are persistently taking an opioid drug without a medical reason.

People develop opioid addictions because they enjoy not feeling any pain, and it helps them relax and get high. Opioids have serious side effects and adverse effects, and when a person starts to withdraw from the opioid, they may experience devastating effects that can cause them to experience outbursts of anger, feel agitated, feel like they cannot function, increase hunger, develop a bad headache, or become violent. Most people who suffer from an opioid addiction cannot function as normal. They cannot be around others who do not use opioids for long periods of time, cause issues with school or work life, cannot differentiate between right and wrong scenarios, and lose a lot of normalcy of living life. They can be isolated by society and lose relationships with friends and family.

Opioid addictions can cause a person’s appearance to change as well. Some people experience hair loss, damaged teeth or loose teeth, lose a significant amount of weight in an unhealthy amount of time, wrinkled or damaged skin, and/or have bulging eyes. Most families who are affected by an opioid addiction often go through vicious cycles of hopelessness, and often struggle with mental health disparities, as overcoming an addiction to opioids is a very hard process. They may watch a loved one turn into someone they no longer recognize. They experience highs and lows, thinking their loved one is getting better, and then realize they are continuing to take opioid drugs.

Will my insurance cover outpatient therapy?

Insurance is known to cover both inpatient and outpatient services for a patient with a medical condition. Some insurance companies require a selection of both inpatient or outpatient, but some can offer a bundle plan that includes both types of services. Some insurance companies may exclude certain outpatient services, such as mental health services, some rehabilitation services, or even some outpatient surgical services.

It would be ideal that when choosing an insurance plan, you bring up questions about the types of services that each plan does not cover and make a decision on what kinds of services you want to include in your plan. If you have children, also take into account what services they may need, and if you have a family history of any medical conditions, also make sure that you prepare for those as well.

If you are someone who is looking at using an outpatient service for a drug or alcohol addiction, reach out to our team at ReMIND Health Group. We are a team that works specifically with outpatient services that are meant to help an individual overcome an addiction that may be suffering from and want to conquer.
