Welcome to this private, out-patient practice of Robert J. Middleton, MD. All clinical services are provided directly by Dr. Middleton and all patient care recommendations and decisions are driven solely by his expert knowledge and experience. He is an Addiction Board Certified physician practicing for 35 years, and is also in continuous recovery from his personal addictions for 25 years.

Doctor is also authorized to use the professional academic designations FACP (elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians, 1998), FASAM (elected Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2001) and DFASAM (Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addicton Medicine, 2016).

Dr. Middleton is a passionate straight talker who combines the newest advances in the neuro- science and medical treatment of addictive diseases with the time-proven principles of successful recovery.

We know for certain that addiction is a brain disease of thinking and feeling that drives our behavior, severely disrupts our emotional control and can also have a very powerful physical component. Thus, effective treatment for addiction is two-fold: abstain from the addictive behavior, and learn to recognize "addiction thinking" that promotes that behavior and not fall prey to it. (If we were able to do this on our own, we already would have).

Medication Assisted Therapies (MAT) can often be extremely valuable in helping many patients achieve stable recovery from addictions. However, it is important to remember that MATs are just tools, not the entire treatment; for example, opioid addiction is not merely a deficiency of buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone, and alcohol addiction is not a deficiency of disulfiram, naltrexone or acamprosate.

What I am effectively able to do therefore, as an expert treating addictions and their many co-existing problems, is provide, for interested patients, personalized psychotherapy and education, coordinated care, honest guidance, and the careful use of medications and other therapies to help result in abstinence from addictive thinking and behaviors. This permits each person to become accountable for making the healthy decisions that promote continued abstinence, personal growth and well-being.

Please note that there is no hospital, treatment center, pharmaceutical or insurance company, or any other business empire owning, managing or influencing the operating policies or medical care provided in this practice. There are no conflicts of interest.

I also encourage you to be skeptical of claims that any individual, unique pill, special formula or amazing new scientific discovery is actually capable of making anyone else "clean and sober". We know that Recovery is 100% voluntary and that each individual is the only person responsible for their own recovery.
