James Scribner

Executive Director, Co-Founder

James Scribner holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. His career began working in the accounting industry as a financial auditor. In that role, James audited a national trade association with over 1,300 member companies that sell health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans. He also conducted official financial examinations of various non-profit organizations and for-profit corporations. This experience allowed him to learn the inner workings of almost any aspect of a company. It also taught him the value of building meaningful relationships with clients and having a strong ethical framework.

James began his personal recovery journey in 2010. Throughout that process, he learned the importance of helping others and living by spiritual principles. Throughout his recovery, James has used his personal story to help make a difference in the lives of others. Over the years he grew into becoming an advocate for people in recovery or seeking recovery from substance use disorders. James is a CCAR Recovery Coach and believes in developing meaningful relationships, and providing highly individualized therapy and client care. In 2017, James had the opportunity to combine his business experience and passion for recovery to start The Freedom Center.

Being born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland, it was always a dream for James to start a program where he began his own recovery journey. Having faced addiction in his own life, and having worked through recovery, James truly understands what it takes to get sober and stay sober. James now has the opportunity to do what he loves and help others achieve long-term recovery. James works alongside the clinical director and administrative team to help ensure that every client benefits from a customized treatment plan and holistic approach that offers freedom from the grips of addiction.

The Freedom Center is truly an amazing place for treatment. The staff is so caring and helpful. The groups are so beneficial to recovery. I absolutely loved my therapist Judy! Overall, an awesome place to get help with addiction. I attended last March 2021 and I am coming up on one year sober! I am so grateful for the Freedom Center!

From start to finish this program has been nothing short of phenomenal. When I went in for intake, every single person had a smile, loving and encouraging words, and an amazing suggestion. They did everything they could to ensure I would be successful. From the second I walked in, I felt: safe, loved, and cherished. This program has saved my life, I have been in and out of treatment centers for over a decade and this is the first one that I felt every employee there LOVED what they did. Also, in the two months of intensive outpatient I did, I learned more about myself than I had in my whole life. I have grown in more ways than I thought was possible. I enjoyed going there every night, I always got something out of what we did, and even when I dropped down from 5 nights a week, I begged to keep going every night. On top of that, they taught me I could have FUN SOBER?! What? Who does that? They do. The events they have and the amazing people who would join, made me realize that I could enjoy and thrive without substances. I’ve made connections to the people who work there, but also to my fellow people in the program. The positive energy and vibes that radiate from there are amazing. I am truly grateful that I was able to go there, and from where I started to now, the growth has been undeniable to everyone. Thank you to everyone at The Freedom Center, every single one of you are amazing and words can not describe how much I needed all of you💕

Friendly staff who treat you well and great counselors. Staff members bring in speakers multiple times a week to share experiences and advice on sober living. Formal NA/AA meeting attendance is two to three times a week, with an additional two in house NA/AA meetings. Activities include weekend outings, gym three times a week, and communal dinners Friday and Sunday. As someone who lives in the area, I was permitted to commute in during the latter half of my treatment. Although convenient in hindsight I would recommend against. The bonds you form with peers in the center are important and the mutual camaraderie fades when you commute in. Only gripe is the restriction on phones, which are typically permitted on the weekend although the first weekend of my treatment we were not allowed to have access to our phones at the sole decision of one house caretaker. Not an overtly big deal given the circumstances of your current situation. This was my first stay at a rehabilitation center, so I have no basis to compare it to other centers. However, from what I garnered from more seasoned associates this is one of the best, if not the best, rehabilitation centers out of many up and down the East Coast.

I can literally write an entire book about my experience at The Freedom Center. Words can’t explain how grateful I am of the establishment and the employees here. I started my journey with sobriety Jan 27, 2020. I haven’t looked back since, 7 days after detox, I was later moved to the freedom center. I was nervous but I was quick put at ease with everyone’s warm welcome. Clients and employees. The entire time I was there I was taken care of and the truly helped me with continuing my success with sobriety. All glory to God for putting Freedom Center in my life. They still check on still till this day. I truly found a Family through this community of people. My name is Cedric, I’ve been sober going on a 1 & 11months to date. Lord willing 2 years on Jan 27 2022. Thank you to all the employees at Freedom Center and all the hard work and dedication you present.

This place helped me in so many ways. The staff has an unbelievable connection to the people who come through there. When I meet someone who needs help, I always recommend the freedom center. They have helped me prevent relapse, build educational values, and strengthen my network. I was new to the area and they made me feel comfortable, and helped me overcome any anxieties I had about going to treatment, sharing, and being in groups. I stay in contact with staff and people I have met through the center to this day and I am thankful I have these friends to reach out to. If you need help, reach out.
