Counseling Can Make Your Life Better...

You or a loved one, can become ill and suffer from a disease such as addiction, substance abuse, depression or other emotional challenges such as anxiety and grief. Who do you turn to when the emotional pain, frustration and anger is so great you can't think? The effects of substance abuse are felt in the entire family, so much so that family members can unintentionally fuel the problem.

There's no blame when we struggle in these ways. What does create more confusion, suffering and pain, however, is not reaching out for help as soon as possible. That's my job, whenever you show up and ask for my help, I will meet you at the door and invite you in to get started making things better for you and those you care about.

Addiction, Substance Abuse and Depression Issues, Teenagers
Many have worked successfully with me on additional challenges such as anxiety and panic attacks, marriage and relationship troubles, career and life transitions, including retirement.

I Work With Men and Women, Husbands and Wives

I enjoy working with men and I am good at what I do. At one time, I focused my practice almost exclusively on men and their unique problems. However, wives and women concerned about the welfare of their husbands or male partners continued to come to me for guidance as to how to deal with their men who were reluctant to seek counseling for themselves.

As a result, I have also become proficient helping women who live with alcoholic husbands , men struggling with PTSD and related issues, stress management and aging concerns.

I work with Teenagers

As a former high school teacher, wrestling coach and girls soccer coach I understand the perspective of young teens and subsequent struggles that bubble up in their peer and family relationships. I have been very successful in helping families find a path to peace.

No Easy Fixes

Although there are no “easy fixing for easy fixes,” the mental health field and addiction psychology in particular, have progressed in developing therapeutic and counseling modalities which are evidence-based and proven to be more strategic in addiction recovery, as well as relapse prevention.

For example, for the chronic signs of alcoholism to become apparent in a person's life, solid and regular drinking for 15 to 20 years is required. Addiction and substance abuse counseling or treatment does not need another 20 years to help an individual regain abstinence and sobriety. Fortunately, professionals such as Bill Miller, Bill White, Nora Volkow, Maia Szalavitz, Gabor Mate and Betty Ford have lead the way in developing research and addiction counseling modalities which put substance abuse treatment and recovery in the modern age of medicine.

However, unlike alcohol consumption, which can make a person feel better quickly, learning to manage the stressors and anxiety of life without alcohol requires some time and commitment to using less destructive methods for feeling good and maintaining life balance. Furthermore, solid and sustained sobriety is not possible without outside help and professional guidance.

Substance Abuse Counseling and Other Support/Resources

Professional counseling can be very effective guiding and sustaining a person and their family as they achieve recovery from the effects of addiction. But, usually that alone is not enough.

I have found that the person who is willing to use support groups, AA, a church group or a therapy group in a counselor's office, for example, moves along more quickly in recovery. Equally important is the use of one-on-one relationships and connections with other individuals developing a new identity around living without alcohol or other mood altering substances. This certainly includes 12-step sponsors, mentors and others with long-term sobriety.
