MY HOBBIES: Outside of the office, Joe is an avid mountain biker, snowboarder, and surfer, and he enjoys spending time with his wife Emily and Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Lily.

Joe Colasurdo was first exposed to physical therapy when he found himself dealing with frequent skateboarding injuries earlier in his life, and this experience led him to pursue a career in the field. He attended Connecticut College, where he double majored to earn Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Psychology in 2015, and where he was also a member of the swim team for four years. Joe then enrolled at the Duke University School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2018.

Joe began his physical therapy career working as a home health physical therapist and outpatient orthopedic physical therapist for underserved rural counties in North Carolina for two years. In July of 2020, he joined the Twin Boro Physical Therapy team as a staff physical therapist at the Ironbound Newark location for about one year, then moved on to assistant director at the West Orange clinic for another year before assuming the position of clinic director at the Millburn location.

With a background in psychology, Joe considers himself to be a “psychologically-informed physical therapist” who understands that pain, disability, and loss of function have a multifactorial impact on the patient. He sees each patient as an individual as opposed to someone with an injured body part, and his treatment approach reflects this understanding by treating the whole person. Joe is skilled at managing patients of all types, but he specializes in sports medicine, post-surgical recovery, vestibular/balance therapy, chronic pain, and Parkinson’s disease therapy. He has received a certification in functional dry needling and is board certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in orthopedics, making him an orthopedic clinical specialist (OCS). Joe has also taken various continued education courses in dry needling, chronic pain, foot/ankle management, vestibular therapy, and Parkinson’s therapy, among other topics, and is a published author.

Joe ensures that all his treatment strategies are based on Twin Boro Physical Therapy’s One2Four™ Care Model. He uses the model as a guideline for helping patients make meaningful short-term goals that evolve into long-term goals, which allows patients to do things they may not have thought were possible before starting physical therapy.

Beautiful & clean place. The staff is very caring, attentive & professional. The atmosphere is very warm, embracing & family oriented as evident by the smiles on the faces of all staff & all patients. I've never had an issue. Larry is very patient, detail oriented and takes his time to ensure you fully understand the therapy & healing process. Lisa makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk in the door. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I recently suffered a left shoulder dislocation from a motorcycle accident. I was matched up with Larry and his crew over at Twin Boro Millburn. He was very patient, knowledgeable, professional and compassionate as my physical therapist. The whole staff was able to help me get back to my normal day-to-day activities and help me become fully functional at work. Working as a traveling nurse, I definitely needed to be back in good strength and they were all able to help me achieve that. Larry was nice enough to follow up on how I was doing a few weeks after I was discharged. Thank you again. Cheers from California!

Larry is excellent, and his team is friendly and efficient. He helped me twice - once to restore my knee after a meniscus tear to full functionality, and also with my rotator cuff problems in my shoulder. Both times my issues were fully resolved with PT ! Larry is extremely skilled, very thorough, listens to the patient's concerns, answers any questions and provides great follow up with at home exercises. While working with different patients in his busy practice he always keeps everything under control and stays on top of everybody's progress. Highly recommended!

Dr. Lawrence Pemberton, aka Larry, is without a doubt one of the most qualified, efficient, professional and courteous physical therapist ever. He creates an atmosphere of healing, peace and confidence to all of his patients. Additionally, while providing the most proficient therapy, he also mentors and supervises a staff of young physical therapist and interns. The receptionist, Lisa, is cordial and welcoming to all clients. I highly recommend Twinboro Millburn physical therapy to anyone seeking assistance with being restored to good health.
